Certification of the country of origin where the product concerned is made. A certificate which identifies the country of origin is typically required for international shipments. Certain countries may entirely bar shipments from certain other countries. In select countries, a notarized certificate of the country of origin may significantly lower the taxes levied. Certain nations require a signed statement as to the origin of the export item. Such certificates are usually obtained through a semi-official organisation such as a local Chamber or Commerce. A certificate may be required even though the commercial invoice contains the information.

MITI New Guidelines for Issuance of Non-Preferential Certificates of Origin

In order to regulate the issuance of Certificates of Origin, Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) has amended and streamlined the existing guidelines for a more effective system of issuing Non-Preferential Certificates of Origin. The new Guidelines are aimed at eliminating cheating and forgery of Certificates of Origin and implemented with effect from 1st June 2008. Under the new guidelines, there are new procedures that have to be adhered to by manufacturers, exporters or traders to obtain Non-Preferential Certificates of Origin.
